How to Put Games on a TI-84 Plus CE Calculator

The TI-84 Plus CE has a color screen and 3MB of flash ROM, making it capable of running classic assembly and C games like Tetris, Super Mario, Pac-Man, Flappy Bird, and Doom. Follow this complete guide to safely transfer and play games on your calculator.

Requirements Before You Start

1. Hardware

A physical TI-84 Plus CE or TI-84 Plus CE Python edition calculator.

2. USB Cable

Mini-USB to USB-A/USB-C data cable (the one included with your calculator).

3. Software

Free TI-Connect CE software installed on your PC or Mac.

Download and Install TI-Connect CE

TI-Connect CE is the official free software by Texas Instruments used to transfer programs and update calculator firmware:

  • Visit the official Texas Instruments downloads portal.
  • Download TI-Connect™ CE for Windows or macOS.
  • Complete the installation and open the application on your computer.

Download Your Favorite Game Files (.8xp)

Calculator games come as archive files containing .8xp program files and .8xv application variables. You can find safe community game ports on popular calculator archives like Cemetech and TI-Planet:

Unzip the downloaded game archive on your computer until you see the .8xp files.

Connect Calculator and Send Files

  1. Turn on your TI-84 Plus CE.
  2. Connect the USB cable between your calculator and your computer.
  3. In TI-Connect CE, click the Calculator Explorer icon on the left sidebar (looks like a small calculator). Your device name should appear in the list.
  4. Drag and drop your .8xp files into the TI-Connect CE window.
  5. A dialog will prompt: "Destination: Archive or RAM". Always select Archive so games are preserved even if RAM resets!
  6. Click Send. Once the progress bar finishes, disconnect the cable.

Launch and Play on Your Calculator

To start playing the game on your TI-84 Plus CE:

1. Press the [prgm] key on the keypad.
2. Use the arrow keys to highlight your game (e.g. prgmTETRIS).
3. Press [enter] twice to execute.
4. Use the arrow keys for movement and [2nd] or [alpha] for action buttons!
